Frequently asked questions
What’s the actual difference between sworn and certified?
Sworn means a MAEC-listed translator has personally signed and stamped it — a legal instrument under Spanish law. Certified means a signed statement of accuracy is attached to a professional translation, without that specific Spanish accreditation. Which one you need depends entirely on what the receiving institution asks for.
How do I know which one my situation needs?
Check the exact wording the institution used. "Traducción jurada" or "sworn translation," or a named Spanish court/notary/extranjería process → Sworn. "Certified translation" or "certificate of accuracy," especially outside Spain → usually Certified. Still unsure? Tell us the institution and country and we’ll flag it before we start.
Can I upgrade from certified to sworn after ordering?
Yes — contact us before we begin, and we’ll adjust the order and price. Once translation has started, a pro-rata charge applies per our refund policy.
Is a certified translation valid for extranjería?
Not usually — most Spanish administrative procedures specifically require sworn translation. Certified is the right product for foreign institutions and internal use, not for extranjería.
